Running Bull
Normally people stand well clear of bulls charging at top speed. However, in some Tamil Nadu villages around the time of Pongal the farmers bring their fastest bulls together and race them through the streets. The inhabitants of villages nearby descended on this particular village. Up to 70,000 crammed onto rooftops and lined the streets as bulls raced through. Men showed their bravery by lining the way and slapping the bull on the hip, driving it on in. The fastest animals win significant prizes for their owners but, by tradition, the bull is sold on the same day as the race. Note the decorated horns of this bull.
